Ramón Castaño Santa, founder of Bodegas Castaño, began to produce the first bulk wines in 1950. A pioneer in the use of the Monastrell grape, he expanded the family heritage with the purchase of new estates. With the gradual incorporation of his three sons, Ramón, Juan Pedro and Daniel Castaño, innovation arrived, thus opening the doors to the international market. 'THE PROJECT OF TWO GENERATIONS'
With a career spanning more than 30 years dedicated to the world of wine, Mariano López, a winemaker by profession, is the creator of CASTAÑO wines. His experience and dedication over the years have been an indispensable part of maintaining a growing quality vintage after vintage. With a serious face but with a cheerful personality, Mariano is already part of our history. We have two winemaking warehouses in Bodegas Castaño where the stainless steel tanks are located for the correct fermentation of the wines with controlled temperatures. An underground cellar for subsequent aging in oak barrels and a warehouse with sleepers for resting in the bottle, both with the best humidity and temperature conditions for the correct evolution of the wine.
Vineyards
Limestone and stony soils are the natural setting for dry-land Monastrell and Garnacha Tintorera vineyards, although we also grow foreign red varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot and, to a lesser extent, white varieties perfectly adapted to this environment, such as Macabeo and Chardonnay. Monastrell is the main red variety within our Yecla Denomination of Origin, an ideal habitat for it to express all its intensity, color, body, structure and smoothness.
A unique grape variety for its qualities to produce wines with a Mediterranean and mineral character. The beginning of the harvest is marked by the white grape varieties, giving way to the collection of red varieties during the month of September, including the Monastrell with a longer vegetable cycle and later maturation. The entire harvest process is manual, to achieve the optimum state of the grape and a higher quality.
New experimental projects
In our desire to excel and with the intention of testing new wine blends, in 2006 we planted an experimental vineyard with eight varieties of red grapes from different countries such as Argentina, Italy, Chile, France and Spain from various appellations of origin. Monastrell being the base of these wines, blending with each of these varieties is a very interesting project for the future. Designation of Origin Yecla, is the only one in Spain with a single municipality, located in the southeast of Spain, it has an area of about 6,500 hectares of vineyards and two very different areas between them. Campo Arriba, north of Yecla, with an altitude of between 700-800 meters and mostly limestone and stony soils. Downfield, south of Yecla, with an altitude between 400-500 meters and soils with a more clayey and sandy composition. Continental climate with long, cold winters and very hot summers. This thermal oscillation of about 20ºC, allows an excellent maturation of the berries. Rainfall is scarce, with an average of 250 liters per square meter per year, and it is also one of the areas with the highest amount of sunshine in Spain, with some 3,400 hours of sunshine recorded annually.
