This is the winery born from the imagination and obstinacy of a character that few people know in Spain but who was a legend during the golden age of Hollywood.
With all of you, Jean Leon. This emigrant from Santander who arrived on the west coast of the United States without a penny in his pocket shortly after World War II, thanks to his ingenuity and his great talent for public relations, managed to break through and become a mythical character in the world of the restoration and creator of the winery that concerns us today. At the beginning of the 60s of the last century, Ceferino Carrión, who was really called Jean Leon, bought a large extension of vineyards in the Penedés region, which he baptized as 'Pago Jean Leon'. There he began an adventure that continues to this day despite the fact that our protagonist died in 1996.
We can safely say that Jean Leon was a pioneer in the world of Spanish wine, since he introduced Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon to Spain. . Jean Leon had seen the spectacular Napa Valley vineyards that mimicked in his own way the typical Bordeaux-area chteau, and he wanted to own something like it. Hence, he introduced this style in Spain, creating his winery in the image and likeness of what was seen: a building in the center of the property and surrounded by vineyards. The 150 hectares of land owned are currently divided into 4 vineyards: La Scala, Le Havre, Gigi and Palau. Viña La Scala is made up of 40-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon, from Lafite-Rotschild grafts.
The wine that gives rise is the Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva. 1969 was the first vintage of this wine, becoming the first Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Spain. Viña Le Havre has 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc that are about 40 years old, from Lafite-Rotschild and Chteau la Lagune grafts. The wine that is obtained from there is the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva. Viña Palau is a 100% Merlot that is about 20 years old, from which Vinya Palau Merlot is obtained. Viña Gigi is a 100% Chardonnay about 40 years old, from grafts of Corton Charlemagne. The wine that gives rise is the Vinya Gigi Chardonnay.
In 1973, the first vintage of this wine was marketed, making Jean Leon the first winery in Spain to plant Chardonnay and carry out barrel fermentation of a white wine. The winery has carried out organic work in its vineyards since 2008, and since the 2012 vintage its wines have been certified organic on the label. Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva, Vinya Palau Merlot and Vinya Gigi Chardonnay make up the estate wines of Jean Leon, to which we must add Zemis, a wine that is only made when the vintage of its coupage (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlort) is excellent. In addition to them we must add the 3055 range of organic wines.
Today the winery is owned by the Torres Family, and its wines are internationally recognized and are exported to more than 40 countries. They have a Visitor Center where we can discover Jean Leon's wine and its legend.
