Reserva Remelluri 2014

79% Tempranillo, 12% Garnacha, 9% Graciano
It was the first Rioja wine based on a single viticultural property according to the classic Bordeaux Medoc model. The remarkable scores of the national and international critics guarantee the good work of the winery, and it is expected that it will offer its best in the coming years thanks to a promising evolution in the bottle. As of this 2014 vintage, they work organically in the vineyard and have cut their production for the sake of even greater quality. It is a vintage that will mark a before and after in this exceptional red.

Area: 94 hectares.
Age: Average 40 years.
Soil: Poor limestone terraces of a calcareous-clay nature and with different plant cover and ridges.
Climate: In 2014 rainfall was the factor that marked the characteristics of the vintage. Very long and humid winter followed by a warm and relatively dry spring that leads to a good sprouting thanks to the winter's water reserve. The cycle follows a good chronology and a hot, dry summer seems to herald a quality year. It is complicated in the maturation period. In September, abundant rainfall occurs constantly and with high temperatures, as well as many foggy mornings. All these factors make the skin soften and the pressure of botrytis is very important, causing damage throughout the appellation, less so in Remelluri due to the altitude and aeration of the vines thanks to the work of thinning, thinning and stripping, but equally form, force a very selective and reasoned harvest.
Yield: 34 hectoliters per hectare.
Harvest: Manual harvest in boxes between October 12 and 24, 2014.
Vinification: Natural fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks and open foudres. Ageing: Aged for about 21 months.
The Wine Advocate:

The estate red 2014 Reserva was produced with the grapes from a challenging year with abundant rain and high temperatures in September. They started picking the 11th of October and had to rush and do a severe selection of grapes. It fermented in small vats and oak casks and matured in barriques for 20 to 21 months. They consider 2014 the breakthrough vintage for Remelluri since Telmo Rodriguez came back in 2010, as it takes time until things are sorted. 2014 was a challenging vintage, but when they compare it with 2013, they still favor 2014. I like it, but honestly, it pales in comparison to the Granja Gran Reserva 2014. 220,000 bottles produced. It was bottled between April and May 2017. - Luis Gutiérrez.

James Suckling:

Aromas of dried flowers, ripe berries and tobacco continue to the palate that is medium-to full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Classic style. Better with a little more bottle age, but already very pretty. Drink or hold.

Tim Atkin:

A step up from the 2013 release, partly because of the better vintage but also because of a growing impression that Remelluri is getting back to its impressive best. Based on Tempranillo, with 20% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, aged in 20% new wood and larger foudres, this is a fresh, nuanced, Atlantic-style red with tobacco pouch, sweet spice and red berry fruit and a backbone of acidity. 2020-28.
