Granja Remelluri 2013

69% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 9% Graciano, 2% otras
This spectacular red wine represents the essence of Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri, the first winery in Rioja based on a single vineyard estate following the classic Bordeaux Medoc model. The grapes for Granja Remelluri come from the selection of the best vineyards that surround the winery that belong to Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri since its foundation by the Hieronymite monks in the fourteenth century. Vintage in which an Atlantic profile and a limited production stand out.

View: Ruby red color.
Nose: Pleasant notes of black fruit, chocolate, pipe tobacco and with a black and mineral background.
Mouth: Warm, deep and elegant step. Tasty, structured and with the point of acidity typical of the vineyards that give it balance, liveliness and great aging capacity.
Name: Nuestra Señora de Remelluri Farm
Description: Vineyards planted at an altitude of between 680 and 780 meters in the municipalities of Labastida and San Vicente de la Sonsierra in the districts of Doroño, Villaescusa, San Esteban, Cascajo and Portillo. Soil: Terraces of poor limestone of a calcareous-clay nature, with a bedrock that outcrops in areas. Climate: The 2013 vintage is characterized by its Atlantic component, marked by abundant rainfall and a cold spring that delayed the vegetative cycle.
Harvest: The manual harvest took place between October 28 and November 2.
Vinification: Naturally fermented with native yeast in small wooden vats. Ageing: Aging for between 29 and 30 months in barrels and foudres of different sizes.
The Wine Advocate:

2013 could very well be the most challenging vintage of recent times, a year with 900 liters of rain, which created a lot of problems, including botrytis during the harvest. Produced selected Tempranillo and Garnacha, thea2013 Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva has lower alcohol, 13.5%, and aged in barrel for 27 to 29 months. Compared with the 2014, you see less-perfect ripeness in the tannins, and it's a little lighter, sharper and a little more austere. I think this is a triumph over the very adverse conditions of the year. 8,000 bottles were filled in May 2016, when they normally produce around 20,000 bottles.

James Suckling:

Lots of dark berries, dried rosemary and thyme on the nose and palate. Juniper. Medium to full body. Firm and lightly chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Linear and tight. Drink now.

Tim Atkin:

This Gran Reserva is approaching or even at its peak already, but it's very appealing in a lighter, savoury, more evolved style. The 20% Garnacha, picked in November, gives the wine some added backbone acidity, providing structure for the sweet, spicy, gamey palate. 2020-23
