Col D’ Orcia Brunello Di Montalcino

100% Sangiovese
Col d’Orcia is a traditional producer of Brunello di Montalcino. The choice to continue using the large Slavonian oak barrels was taken many years ago, well before the debate between modernist and traditionalist producers even started. Tradition means respecting the essence of Sangiovese from Montalcino which is the aging potential and the improvement of the wine through its long passage in wood and the subsequent aging in the bottle. Still today, at Col d’Orcia, we age our Brunello di Montalcino for a full 3 years in the large barrels before bottling and keep the bottles in cellar at least 1 year before releasing the wine to the market.

The Brunello di Montalcino from Col d'Orcia enters the glass with a radiant ruby red color and violet reflections. The intense and charismatic bouquet of this Sangiovese monovarietal exudes the typical Brunello notes of ripe red berries, juicy cherries and fully ripe plums. Nuances of roasted nuts, a bit of licorice and fine oak complement the nose of this superior wine from Col d'Orcia.

On the palate, the Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino presents itself with an excellent structure, already well-rounded tannins and a vital fruity acidity, but never annoying. Long, spicy and pleasant finish.

The grapes for this Brunello come from special clones of Sangiovese and undergo another rigorous selection after the manual harvest. The yield of this Col d'Orcia wine is almost half (45 hl/ha) of the maximum permitted yield of 80 hl/ha for Brunello di Montalcino.

Fermentation takes place with the skins for about 18-20 days at a controlled temperature below 28°C in 150 hl stainless steel tanks. The goal is to extract as much color and tannin as possible. Brunello di Montalcino from Col d'Orcia is aged for 3 years in 25-50 and 75 hl Slavonian and Allier oak barrels, followed by at least 12 months of refining in the bottle.
